What inspired you to found your startup?
Why shipping containers? We’re asked this often. The answer is clear: because we’ve had a screwdriver in our hands before we could even walk properly, and there was nothing better than to play with building blocks, or to spend time with dad in the workshop. Later this fascination extended to building, tech, and big machines, which still thrills us to this day.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Coming from different career paths and with different hobbies we’re focussing on what counts: doing work that we are passionate about and that we enjoy; inspiring people to make something that is just a bit better than the way others would do it.
Is there anything you’d do differently if you could do it again?
No, I wouldn’t change a thing. There are certain things that could be solved differetly in hindsight, but these are experiences that one simply had to go through.
What problem does your product solve?
Each BOX system has its own market, its own business model, a special target market, and differentiated competitors on a product and service level. We develop system solutions that take into account special customer wishes and problems. Our SafeBOXs, for example, solve both a security problem and at the same time satisfy the need for electricity as people want to charge their mobile phones and other electronic gadgets.
Where do you see your company in 1/5/10 years?
No need to look into the future: already we see ourselves as an integrated system provider, which is far more than just a company that repurposes shipping containers. We recognise particular needs and develop innovative and sustainable business models, where the core idea centres on the BOX, for a rapidly changing society.
How are you different?
Who should we differentiate ourselves from?
How often does your product/service show up in a user’s day or week?
This depends on the box. At your favourite festival it’s once a year, or daily if you wkae up in your “WohnBOX”.
Impact: how are you doing good and building a better future?
Globalisation, fast-paced market developments, and ever-shorter product life spans mean that our society is faced with major challenges, not least to save resources. We work not only with upcycled shipping containers, but also develop solutions for the increasing demand for temporary spaces.
How has the startup scene in Berlin changed?
It grew up. No longer is it all talk – people are simply doing things.
What are the pros and cons of launching your startup from Berlin?
The ecosystem in Berlin is very suited to founders through its infrastructure, but as the idea for BigBoxBerlin originated here it’s simply home sweet home.
Bonus Question: Anything else that we need to know about you?
BigBoxBerlin was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Berlin“, October 2017.
