What inspired you to found your startup?
I founded Careship together with my brother, Nikolaus, due to a very personal experience in our own family: when our grandmother became care dependent, it was extremely difficult for us to find the right caregiver for her. This experience was so frustrating, that we decided to provide a better solution for others by giving all families easy access to qualified personnel. I quit my job and Nikolaus moved from Berkeley to Berlin and we founded Careship to help families find the right caregiver for their loved ones so that they can age at home with grace.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Quoting Tim Ferriss, I also believe that success is a combination of two things: achievement and appreciation: “Achievement without appreciation makes you ambitious but miserable. Appreciation without achievement makes you unambitious but happy.” At Careship, how we define success is deeply rooted in our company values. We believe that ‘If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed’ (William McRaven). No matter how big or small, set goals, break them down into tasks, accomplish them, enjoy the ride while doing so and celebrate accomplishments.
Is there anything you’d do differently if you could do it again?
I don’t believe in what-if’s, because decisions were made in a certain context and were the right decisions at that right time. Live is always lived forwards and understood backwards, and the riskiest thing is not to take risks. What’s important is to always keep moving by learning quickly, iterating quickly, and adapting quickly. And the most important thing when founding a startup is who to found your startup with and who to work with – and I am very happy to have the best co-founder in the world.
What problem does your product solve?
The amount of people in need of care in Germany is rising dramatically, and the number of care dependent people will double by 2050, while the availabilities of caregivers is continuously declining. Moreover, organizing in-home senior care today is highly complicated, non-transparent and frustrating for everyone involved: seniors, their families, and caregivers. With Careship, we change that. Fueled by convenience, transparency and best-in-class user experience, Careship is the easiest way to find the most suitable and qualified caregivers for your loved ones so that they can remain in the comfort of their own home for as long as possible.
Where do you see your company in 1/5/10 years?
Leading company for in-home senior care services in Europe.
How are you different?
Careship is digitalising in-home senior care by providing families with access to organise and manage care for their loved ones. Fueled by convenience and transparency, Careship is the easiest way to find the most suitable caregivers for your loved ones when you cannot be there.
How often does your product/service show up in a user’s day or week?
Depending on the care need daily or weekly.
Impact: how are you doing good and building a better future?
At Careship, we are doing a very grateful job: everyday, we are improving the live of senior citizens. We are devoting our attention, our time and our energy to help people in need in order to bring joy to their everyday life and to fight against loneliness and seclusion. We are proud to have so many passionate people joining our mission in order to build a better future together.
What are the pros and cons of launching your startup from Berlin?
Berlin is a great place to launch a startup. Berlin’s ecosystem provides a great foundation, and access to capital, access to great talent and platforms for knowledge exchange are unmatched. We did not experience any cons.
Bonus Question: Anything else that we need to know about you?
Since we are a brother-and-sister founded startup, people often ask us how it is to work with your sibling. In general, I am convinced that the most important thing when founding a startup is who to found your startup with. Think about this hard. It will make or break your company, and is the key element to success. I am immensely happy to have a cofounder that shares the same values, and to work in an environment were we fully trust and respect each other. And on top, we are siblings too, which works out great for us : )
Careship was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Berlin“, October 2017.
