Michael Bartl (Managing Director Business) and Marco Maier (Managing Director Technology) Louisa Summer
What inspired you to found your startup?
The inspiration came from a scientific paper on affective computing published by MIT. From that moment on, I have absorbed everything on the fascinating topic of AI-driven innovation and emotion recognition. Together with Emotion AI expert Marco, I formed the TAWNY team and vision.
How are you different? What is your unique value proposition?
For nearly 20 years, the “Haus der Innovation” has been the spot in Munich where we invent and develop new products for 70% of the DAX-listed companies. Being part of this unique innovation ecosystem allows TAWNY to be at the heart of where innovation happens in large corporations.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Success for us is rooted in two areas: technological advancement and creating actual business value for our clients. In a team of highly talented AI experts, you have to strive for exploring the new, but at the same time, user-centric thinking has to be the basis for everything we do. This balance is key.
What do you want to achieve next year?
TAWNY’s aim in the next 12 month is to become Europe’s most successful, knowledgeable, and technologically advanced player in Emotion AI.
Why do people want to work at your company?
Our team is infected with the mission to create a new era of how humans live together with machines. This creates an energetic working environment and a high intellectual challenge for those who want to discover and explore Human AI.
What has been the most important milestone so far?
The most important milestones were the moments when pitching TAWNY evoked this flash in the eyes of the clients saying “the penny has dropped, this will change my business, let’s start with this”. These moments confirm that you are on the right track.
Looking back at your whole development story — what makes you most proud?
It is fascinating what can be created during a two-year period: from an electrical impulse in your brain, to a company able to attract extraordinary AI talent and to drive front-end innovation in reknowned corporations. We are very proud to have triggered something big.
Where do you see your company in 5 years?
We want to be a worldwide leading player on Emotion AI, born in Europe. Otherwise we wouldn’t have started this journey.
What is your impression of launching a startup from your based city?
Munich and the Isar Valley have a lot to offer: industry, science, talents, international visibility, and a lively AI community. After all, Munich is a great place to live, too.
What is your impression of the german startup scene? Would you change anything?
It developed great, especially in the workplace-attractiveness for young people, attention of the traditional German corporates reputation within international investment community. The willingness to start and invest in deep tech companies could be improved, though.
TAWNY was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Germany“, November 2018.
