Interview with Enfore

What inspired you to found your startup?

Actually I have been thinking about how to help and support small business since I started StarOffice – that was over 30 years ago. There are about 200 million small business worldwide. They are the largest segment in the entire technology world. But until now, there is no global player that serves them. Today everything is determined by software and small business need the same technologies as big companies, but they can not afford them. So we want to equip these companies with the technology they need to be competitive in a connected world. Our mission is to help those 200 million small business owners to run their business and enable them to have equal opportunities as large companies.

How do you define success for yourself and your company?

We have been working tirelessly (for the last 8 years) to develop the Enfore software and also the hardware To build an open business platform that will help millions of small companies to run their business is a pretty complex and ambitious project. Now we are ready to launch. Success for the company is delivering a solution to our small business customers that allows them to become a connected business: fast, easy and affordable. Success for me in a professional context is to enable Enfore and our team to execute on our vision and capitalise on our potential.

What problem does your product solve?

We have developed an open business platform for the development, sales and marketing of vertical solutions for smaller companies that will enable 200 million small businesses to become connected businesses by delivering an end-to-end solution including hardware, software and cloud services fast, easy and affordable. Our first step is to enter the local business segment. In this segment we have defined three verticals – Hospitality (e.g. Catering and hotel), Retail and Services. The Enfore software and hardware will be able to help 50 million local merchants and service providers to run a point of sales/service.

Where do you see your company in 1/5/10 years?

Our focus right now is to launch Enfore and to provide the business platform and the most important applications for the local business segment. After the launch in Germany this summer, we plan to quickly expand our business to other markets and regions. We also plan to address further customer groups, for example the service sector. In addition to this, we will provide tools to developers so that they can write their own applications so that we can achieve broader coverage for different business verticals. As mentioned earlier, our long term goal is to help 200 million small businesses to run their business.

How are you different?

Even though the small business segment ist the largest and most valuable market in the world, nobody has managed to dominate this single, unspoiled segment as a global player. It is very difficult to individually address the needs of a small company and they are also very heterogeneous. Enfore is the first company in the world that focuses solely on the special needs of a small business and offers a software and hardware solution that is affordable, fast and easy to use.

How often does your product/service show up in a user’s day or week?

Small business that use the Enfore software and hardware will use it every single day.

Impact: how are you doing good and building a better future?

At the moment small business are not able to use technology and software for their benefit in the same way large companies do. It is therefore increasingly difficult for small businesses to keep customers in the long term. By providing small business owners with the technology they need to be competitive in a connected world, we will help them to survive and grow their business. I mentioned this before: I think small is beautiful, and I do not want to live in a world where there is only Amazon, Ebay and Zalando. Please do not get me wrong. These are great companies, but I like the competition and diversity. Enfore is here to enable competition and diversity.

How has the startup scene in Berlin changed?

When we started in 2009, it was the beginning of the Berlin startup scene. Now there are venture capitalists from all around Europe and even the world. Berlin has managed to be recognised globally as a startup hub

What are the pros and cons of launching your startup from Berlin?

Pro: Berlin definitely has a vibrant scene and it allows us to attract talent, not just from Germany but from across the world.
Con: Because of Berlin’s positive hype you need to look more careful through talent in contrast to people who just want to join the ride
