Michael Weisbach (Co-Founder, Managing Director Technology) and Thomas Winter (Co-Founder, Managing Director Business Development) Valeska Hoischen
What inspired you to found your startup?
My partner Michael Weisbach came up with the idea of developing software that enables automated ID authetication with smart devices. I quickly understood the potential of this endeavor. So the decision to found our own company was made within seconds.
How are you different? What is your unique value proposition?
We provide the only completely automated ID verification software available on the market. While most of our competitors rely on manual verification with the help of call center staff to assess the authenticity of an ID, we use algorithms. This is faster, more reliable, and cheaper.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Making our customers happy is the greatest success for a company as young as we are. But we also believe that the right team spirit is essential for success. Ulltimately, it is all about having a motivated and skilled team in place that has fun serving our customers.
What do you want to achieve next year?
Our objective for the next 12 months is to win as much customer trust as possible. We will enhance our technical advantage and double our revenues.
Why do people want to work at your company?
I think our team spirit is one of the main reasons to work for jenID. Besides that, we are a company where every single person can make a difference. If you have a great idea you can bring it to life.
What has been the most important milestone so far?
Our first important milestone was definitely closing our Series A funding. We are still grateful for the support of our key investors and one business angel. Having had our product launch in London, as well as having signed our first customer contract have been important milestones, too.
Looking back at your whole development story — what makes you most proud?
I feel lots of pride when realizing what enormous achievement has been made by a small team within a very tight time frame and a fairly restrictive budget. That proves that team work is key to success.
Where do you see your company in 5 years?
We aim to become one of the leading ID authentication service providers in Europe.
What is your impression of launching a startup from your based city?
Jena is the perfect hub for those startups that deal with optical technology. Two universities provide skilled and motivated people who would like to gain their first work experience. And the bm|t is an institutional investor that supports promising teams on their way to becoming real companies.
What is your impression of the german startup scene? Would you change anything?
Well, sometimes I feel that the German start-up scene is too much focussed on Berlin. There is no doubt that Berlin is the German epicenter for start-ups. But I bet there are many more high-potential founders outside of the capital that are worth being made visible.
jenID Solutions was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Germany“, November 2018.
