What inspired you to found your startup?
Till wanted to keep classical music relevant in the digital age by building the best streaming service for classical music and creating a completely new experience that satisfies classical music lovers’ needs. Christoph was excited by the idea of building a niche streaming service with strong differentiation and wanted to shape the future of classical music. We had not worked together yet, but we realized that we were the team needed to build the leading streaming service for classical music.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Our team is building the world’s best streaming service for classical music lovers. Every day we dedicate our passion and work to making a great service even better and improving the user experience. We also help artists more easily reach their audiences, listeners to feel closer to musicians and to create a more convenient classical music experience. When new users and musicians discover the value of our service, it makes our company proud and more successful.
Is there anything you’d do differently if you could do it again?
In the beginning we built our technology mostly with external partners which reflected in the user experience. It was a challenge to reach the high-quality streaming experience we wanted to provide to classical music lovers, and we soon recognized the importance of building our technology in-house as well as focusing and aligning the different approaches of our tech teams.
What problem does your product solve?
Streaming companies like Spotify want to satisfy the needs of mainstream music listeners. Their search considers the three criteria artist, title and genre and is unable to distinguishing between the various criteria that classical music lovers need for a convenient searching, discovering, and listening experience. Idagio was the first to launch a streaming service that solves this problem. We have built our technology as a base for what many already call “the best search in classical music.”
Where do you see your company in 1/5/10 years?
In one year: Leading classical music service with the most available repertoire.
In five years: Widely acknowledged market leader with a very loyal userbase.
In ten years: The worldwide leader in classical music streaming and number one partner of the global classical music community.
How are you different?
Our data model creates the most structured classical music database on the market. Our technology provides a unique search functionality which allows our users to experience a highly convenient streaming service and enables them to find, discover, and listen to what will very soon be the most comprehensive collection in classical music.
How often does your product/service show up in a user’s day or week?
Our service is a daily companion to our users. Whenever they have the desire to listen and discover the classical music world, we appear in our user’s day. These highly individual moments can hardly be indicated by averages.
Impact: how are you doing good and building a better future?
Artists and their global audiences can be brought together more closely by technology, creating a vast number of new opportunities to experience classical music. We are part of a greater effort to preserve the traditions of this universal language which has always built bridges between cultures, generations, and nations, thereby creating a global community around classical music.
How has the startup scene in Berlin changed?
The startup scene has become more mature in terms of sustainable business models and available funding. Today, being “Made in Berlin” is a strong brand for startups, creating a sense of pride and local identification within companies and attracting global tech talent to start their adventure in Berlin.
What are the pros and cons of launching your startup from Berlin?
Berlin is the world’s capital for classical music: Eight professional orchestras and three opera houses. No other city has this. The world associates classical music with central Europe and especially Berlin. And Berlin is a startup and technology hub. These two resources are only available in Berlin in the symbiosis we needed to launch a successful company. For us, there has never been any alternative to Berlin.
Bonus Question: Anything else that we need to know about you?
We have brought together a team of tech-interested classical music experts with music-loving tech gurus to create a completely new classical music experience. From the founders to the experts we merged creativity with analytical thinking, tradition with innovation, and right brain with left brain, driving positive synergies in a passionate team.
