Martin Schott (Co-Founder) and Raphael Fellmer (Co-Founder) Nils Lucas
What inspired you to found your startup?
Since 2009 I am tackling food waste. During a 5 years in a “money strike” I raised a lot of awareness for food waste and founded the foodsharing movement. Together with my co-founder Martin Schott we wanted to make a difference and decided to make foodsaving mainstream, that’s why we founded SIRPLUS
How are you different? What is your unique value proposition?
We create a Win-Win-Win situation for stakeholders. Together with our 30 partners like METRO, we are tackling food waste and make it easy for business and consumers alike to become part of the solution to save surplus food. Businesses save disposal cost, we pay for the food and consumers save money.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Our goal is to end food waste and we believe by creating awareness and solutions like ours, we can save up to 30% of all the food which is wasted today. Apart from scaling up our business it is important for us to reach consumers and business to become more aware.
What do you want to achieve next year?
We will open three new food outlets, boost our online shop and reach 10 million more people with our message, that everybody can be a foodsaver. Our goal for 2019 is to save 3000 tons of food and a movement of food appreciation students and pupils by empowering them with tools and information.
Why do people want to work at your company?
Because SIRPLUS is tackling on of the most important issues of the 21st century. We are solving a social, ethical and environmental problem. Employees who have a high ethical standard in their work can realize themselves here. As a social start-up, our employees take on a lot of responsibilities.
What has been the most important milestone so far?
Our 2 food oultets. In numbers we could save already 800 tons of food, over a millions products and almost 800 t of C02 Emissions. With more than 1000 clients a day, we feel our community is growing every day and we are very thankful for that support of all our partners and costumers alike.
Looking back at your whole development story — what makes you most proud?
What makes us most proud is the encouragement of so many positive people. Whether business angels or our employees. Each and every one of them gives us a deep trust in what we do. We are extremely proud of our employees and are sure that we have the best team in the world.
Where do you see your company in 5 years?
We will have franchising, our own products made of surplus food and are established in 3 countries.
What is your impression of launching a startup from your based city?
Since our opening we have received a lot of media attention (via radio, television and magazines/newspapers). Berlin, as an innovative city, was definitely the best starting point for our project, so we are now ready to go to other cities as well.
What is your impression of the german startup scene? Would you change anything?
It is important to us to get more support offers. Also cooperation with larger companies is necessary, so that synergies can develop.
SIRPLUS was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Germany“, November 2018.
