What inspired you to found your startup?
In 2016, we started to ask ourselves whether we coul code sustainability. All of our discussions always culminated with the same topic: farming – with soil as its basis. We have to find ways to use resources more efficiently. Knowledge about soil is the key.
How are you different? What is your unique value proposition?
AgTech is one of the hottest sectors at this time. While 99% of competitors focus on crop and plant detection, we start with the ground basis: soil detection. We characterize soil remotely, in a faster, easier, and more accurate way than ever before.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Success is being paid for something that you are good at, something you love, and something that makes the world more positive. The positive impact that SMART CLOUD FARMING strives for is building a sustainable future for agriculture with emerging technologies. We want to preserve the soil, and to feed the world.
What do you want to achieve next year?
Next year we aim to reach 85% accuracy from our remote soil analysis software SoilEye. Currently, we’ve obtained very satisfying results during our pilot farming validation trial on a 1100 ha farm in Brandenburg.
Why do people want to work at your company?
People that work at SMART CLOUD FARMING are passionate about sustainability, agriculture, and Geoinformation sciences. They want to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all in the proactive and enthusiastic startup scene of Berlin.
What has been the most important milestone so far?
Right now, we are involved in several final steps with a number of potential partners and associations. We were ranked first place for the BPW sustainability award 2018.
Looking back at your whole development story — what makes you most proud?
We are really proud of putting the right people, partners, and associations together for the common goal of sustainable soil management. Although we are formally an AgTech startup, we see ourselves more as a technology aggregator which catalyzes innovation in agriculture.
Where do you see your company in 5 years?
In 5 years, we see SMART CLOUD FARMING’s technology being the standard for farming action recommendations — not only in Europe, but also on the African continent. More than 60% of the soil there is already degraded, and is in need of a holistic approach for agriculture.
What is your impression of launching a startup from your based city?
Being an entrepreneur is like jumping off a cliff and constructing the airplane while falling.
What is your impression of the german startup scene? Would you change anything?
The German startup scene is very interactive and fast. However, concerning the AgTech sector, it is necessary to strengthen the connection between startups and business partners (companies and farmers) as well as increase the access to risk capital to startup to foster innovation.
SMART CLOUD FARMING was featured in “The Hundert Vol. 10 – Startups of Germany“, November 2018.
