What inspired you to found your startup?
Many things played into it, but in the end, I founded BIO-LUTIONS for my daughter. When she was born, I realised I didn’t want to leave her a planet that is drowning in plastic, so I knew I had to do something about it.
How are you different? What is your unique value proposition?
We are different because our products can compete on price with plastic. Bioplastic is expensive, paper requires a lot of chemicals and bleaching, and all of them require dedicated raw materials. We use organic material that is a by-product of harvesting, and that does not infringe on the food chain.
How do you define success for yourself and your company?
Every product sold is a success, because it means one less plastic item is used. However, I think success means that we have a positive impact along our entire value chain. That’s why we create local jobs, work with local NGOs, source from small farmers, and pay above-market price for our raw materials.
What do you want to achieve next year?
In 2019 we want to expand production in India, and to open our first production sites in Germany and Thailand. We also plan to raise further capital to accelerate our international expansion.
Why do people want to work at your company?
Our dedicated team stands behind our mission, and each one wants to be part of the solution to make single use plastic, one of the greatest problems of our time, obsolete.
What has been the most important milestone so far?
In August we celebrated the opening of our first production plant in Bangalore. To see an idea come to life, and having the entire production capacity sold out before even starting production, is amazing.
Looking back at your whole development story — what makes you most proud?
I am most proud of seeing how BIO-LUTIONS has brought so many people together because they believe in the same idea. These include our partners in India, everyone in our team, and many experts who volunteered their know-how and expertise to make this idea a reality.
Where do you see your company in 5 years?
BIO-LUTIONS is a mass market product. In five years we want to be in 40 countries, whether with production plants or through distributors. Our goal is to establish decentralized productions around the world, to minimize CO2 emissions and maximize our positive social impact.
What is your impression of launching a startup from your based city?
I have personally had very good experiences here. This is my second business in Hamburg, and I find that it is a city with exceptional talent and a great business community.
What is your impression of the german startup scene? Would you change anything?
I really wish that more risk capital investor would consider companies outside the tech-industry. There are a lot of really great ideas, companies and products out there that get overlooked because they are more asset heavy.
