With an area of 430.000m², Westhafen is the largest harbor in Berlin. After many difficulties, construction began in 1914 but quickly came to a halt due to World War I. In 1923 BEHALA (Berlin’s harbor and storage corporation) was founded as the operating company and the harbor was opened.
